In this recurring section of our blog, we regularly feature some of the work of our members with the hopes that the profile might inspire some new connections, ideas, and community building. If you’re a Thread STL member and interested in being a future Member Snapshot, drop us a line at

Member Name: Jenny Armbruster

Title: Director of Community Services

Name of partnership, coalition, or collective impact effort: NCADA (National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse)

What is your effort trying to achieve? NCADA works to reduce or prevent the harms of alcohol and other drug use through education, intervention, and advocacy. We help to mobilize local communities to change the conditions and norms related to substance use in their local areas.

When your friends or family found out you do this work, what do they say or ask? They say that it’s needed work and everyone is impacted by substance use in some way.

What are some of your strongest beliefs that support the work you do or your approach to it? The answers for a community exist within the community. As technical assistance providers, we can offer some process and structure, but it takes community members to really make the difference.

If there was one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in a role similar to yours as a partnership/coalition facilitator, what would it be? It’s all about building relationships and an art more than a science. Take your time to talk with everyone.

What do you do when you’re not working? I stay busy in my own community – raising 3 kids and being involved in their activities, school, and our local neighborhood.
